The Canadian County Sheriff’s Office in Oklahoma has added a new 2026 Lenco BearCat armored rescue vehicle, strengthening the agency’s ability to protect deputies, first responders, and civilians during high-risk law enforcement incidents.
The new BearCat was acquired through a combination of state grant funding and Sheriff’s Office funds, providing Canadian County with a purpose-built armored rescue vehicle for critical incidents where protection, mobility, and safe access are essential.
For Sheriff Chris West, the reason behind the acquisition is simple: safety.
“Our responsibility is to protect the citizens of Canadian County while ensuring our deputies have the equipment necessary to return home safely after every shift,” said Sheriff West. “The BearCat is not an offensive vehicle—it is a rescue and protection platform. It allows our deputies to resolve dangerous situations more safely while reducing the risk to innocent civilians, first responders, and even suspects.”
An Armored Rescue Vehicle Built Around Safety
Armored vehicles are sometimes misunderstood as offensive equipment. The role of the BearCat armored rescue vehicle is fundamentally about protection: giving first responders a secure platform to approach dangerous situations, evacuate people from hazardous areas, conduct negotiations, and reach injured civilians or personnel.
Canadian County plans to deploy its BearCat during high-risk search and arrest warrants, barricaded suspect incidents, hostage situations, active threats, and other critical incidents where ballistic protection is needed.
The BearCat can also provide a protected platform for negotiations, rescue operations, and the evacuation of injured civilians, law enforcement officers, firefighters, and other first responders.
Key BearCat capabilities supporting these missions include:
- Standard multi-hit .50 caliber ballistic protection
- Four-wheel drive for mobility across challenging terrain
- Protected transport capacity for personnel and rescue operations
- Multiple access points to support deployment and evacuation
- Mission-specific configurations and options that allow agencies to equip the vehicle around their operational needs
These capabilities are designed to give responders more options during critical incidents, creating protected space and time for rescue, evacuation, communication, negotiation, and safer resolution.
From an MRAP to a Purpose-Built BearCat
The Canadian County Sheriff’s Office previously utilized a Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle. Originally designed for military combat environments, MRAPs can be significantly larger and heavier, which may limit maneuverability on residential streets and in confined areas.
The BearCat gives Canadian County a platform specifically designed for the needs of law enforcement and first responders. Combining ballistic protection with four-wheel-drive mobility, passenger capacity, and mission-specific configurations, the BearCat provides agencies with a versatile armored rescue vehicle for operations ranging from high-risk incidents to rescue and evacuation.
Grant Funding Can Help Agencies Acquire a BearCat
The State of Oklahoma provided a $300,000 grant, funded by the Oklahoma Legislature and administered through the Oklahoma Office of the Attorney General. The Canadian County Sheriff’s Office contributed the remaining $87,285, bringing the total BearCat investment to $387,285.
For agencies considering a BearCat, funding doesn’t necessarily have to come from a single source. Federal, state, regional, and other public safety grant programs may provide opportunities to help fund qualifying equipment purchases.
Lenco can also assist agencies exploring grant funding opportunities for a BearCat, helping departments identify resources and navigate the funding process as they plan their armored rescue vehicle acquisition.
