When Hurricane Irma made landfall in South Florida in September 2017, it brought destructive winds, flooding, fallen trees, and widespread damage that quickly overwhelmed conventional emergency response.
As conditions deteriorated, the Lenco BearCat became the only emergency vehicle operating on the roads in Coral Springs. Over approximately 15 hours, the team responded continuously to emergency calls, rescuing residents trapped after trees fell onto homes, conducting welfare checks, transporting patients requiring urgent medical care, and even helping deliver and transport a newborn baby during the hurricane.

Training Makes the Difference
The BearCat’s capabilities made the mission possible, but preparation made it successful.
Before Hurricane Irma arrived, the City of Coral Springs enacted its emergency procedures and intentionally staffed the BearCat with two SWAT officers and two SWAT medics who regularly trained together. The vehicle was configured with medical supplies, rescue equipment, communications gear, and the resources needed to operate independently throughout an extended emergency.
That preparation allowed the team to transition seamlessly between rescue operations, welfare checks, patient transport, and emergency medical care as conditions continued to evolve.
