The Watertown Police Department has strengthened its emergency response capabilities with the addition of a new Lenco BearCat Armored Rescue Vehicle, providing officers and fellow first responders with a purpose-built platform for responding to the community’s most dangerous incidents.

Designed for high-risk situations, the BearCat will serve as a rescue and defensive platform during armed standoffs, barricaded subjects, active threats, rescue operations, and severe weather emergencies. Department leaders emphasized that the vehicle is not intended for routine patrol, but for the rare situations where enhanced protection can help save lives.

When introducing the new vehicle, the department reinforced that its mission remains centered on protecting life.

“Our mission has always been the protection of life. This vehicle is an important safety resource that helps us better protect our officers, EMS personnel, firefighters, and most importantly, the citizens we serve during dangerous and unpredictable incidents.”

That philosophy closely aligns with Lenco’s founding belief: the people who risk their lives to keep us safe deserve a vehicle purpose-built to help keep them safe.

Rather than replacing traditional patrol vehicles, the BearCat fills a specialized role by providing protected transportation, ballistic protection, and tactical mobility during incidents where standard police vehicles simply are not designed to operate.

Why Agencies Choose the BearCat

The Lenco BearCat is engineered to provide agencies with the mobility, visibility, and protection needed to safely respond to dangerous incidents. Standard capabilities include:

  • Mil-Spec steel armor and multi-hit ballistic glass designed to protect against high-caliber rifle threats.
  • Capacity for 10 to 12 fully equipped officers, allowing entire tactical teams to deploy together from a protected platform.
  • A Ford F-550 commercial chassis, providing dependable performance, simplified maintenance, and readily available replacement parts.
  • Four-wheel-drive capability and exceptional maneuverability for navigating difficult terrain, disaster areas, and challenging access points.
  • Multiple roof hatches, access doors, and configurable mission equipment to support a wide range of tactical and rescue operations.

Building Community Understanding

The department also announced plans to introduce the BearCat to the community through public outreach events, educational materials, and opportunities for residents to see the vehicle firsthand. The BearCat made its public debut during the community’s Touch-A-Truck event and will also be featured during a “Fill the Rescue Vehicle” food drive supporting local families.

While primarily serving law enforcement, the BearCat also provides a protected platform for firefighters, EMS personnel, and other first responders during coordinated emergency operations. Whether assisting with a barricaded subject, evacuating civilians during an active threat, or helping responders safely access areas affected by severe weather, the vehicle expands an agency’s ability to protect both responders and the public.

These outreach efforts help reinforce the BearCat’s purpose as a rescue and protection platform designed to safeguard lives during the community’s most dangerous incidents.

Strengthening Public Safety in Watertown

The addition of a Lenco BearCat reflects the Watertown Police Department’s commitment to preparing for the unexpected while prioritizing the safety of officers, fellow first responders, and the community.

Lenco Armored Vehicles is honored to support that mission by providing a purpose-built armored rescue vehicle that delivers the protection, mobility, and reliability agencies depend on when every decision matters most.
