After more than 20 years of dependable service from its original Lenco Bear, the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office has upgraded to a new Lenco BearCat armored rescue vehicle, ensuring the Mahoning Valley Crisis Response Team is equipped for today’s public safety challenges.
The new BearCat replaces a Lenco Bear that had served the agency since 2004. As the previous vehicle aged, maintenance became more challenging due to limited parts availability, making the transition to a modern platform a smart investment in long-term readiness.
Why Upgrade from a Lenco Bear to a BearCat?
For many agencies, upgrading from a Lenco Bear to a BearCat is a natural evolution. While the original Bear delivered decades of reliable service, the BearCat builds on that legacy with a purpose-built design that offers enhanced mobility, a commercial chassis for simplified maintenance, configurable mission equipment, and the versatility needed for today’s evolving emergency response missions.
The result is an armored rescue vehicle that helps agencies remain prepared for critical incidents while reducing long-term maintenance concerns and improving operational flexibility.

The new BearCat will serve the Mahoning Valley Crisis Response Team, providing armored support for SWAT operations and other high-risk incidents throughout Mahoning, Trumbull, and Columbiana counties. In addition to tactical deployments, the vehicle can support rescue operations, evacuations, and other emergencies where protected transportation helps keep first responders and civilians safe.
