Boca Considers Armored Vehicle Purchase

Boca Raton, FL – There may be a BearCat coming to Boca Raton – not a new sports team, but an armored vehicle requested by the police department. At its last meeting the City Council authorized spending $250,000 on a vehicle of the
department’s choosing.

“This fills a gap in our current needs of providing advanced tactical protection,” Boca Raton Police Chief Dan Alexander said.

He cited “active shooter,” barricaded subjects, citizen rescues and evacuation, and protection of SWAT members and other officers serving search and arrest warrants as possible scenarios in which an armored vehicle could be used.

Alexander said the department is looking for a vehicle that can provide protection from bullets fired from highpowered rifles and from potentially explosive devices. “We will look at weapons of mass destruction specifications,” he added.
