When torrential rains and flash flooding struck Honolulu a few weeks ago, local emergency services faced a critical challenge: reaching residents stranded by rapidly rising waters that made traditional ambulances and rescue vehicles unusable.

Honolulu EMS met this challenge head-on, deploying their Lenco BearCat Advanced Rescue MedCat G3. Engineered specifically for high-stakes medical extraction in hazardous environments, the MedCat G3 proved to be a lifesaver, successfully performing 25 high-water rescues in areas where standard response assets were grounded.

Navigating the Unreachable

Floodwaters create a unique set of obstacles for first responders. Beyond the depth of the water itself, submerged debris, unpredictable currents, and unstable terrain can disable even heavy-duty commercial trucks.

The MedCat G3 is designed to bypass these limitations. Built on a heavy-duty chassis with high ground clearance and 4×4 off-road capabilities, it allows crews to navigate flooded streets and rural landscapes with confidence. In Honolulu, these features were the difference between a stalled rescue attempt and a successful extraction.

The BearCat: More Than Just an APC

While the BearCat is well-known for its protection in tactical environments, the MedCat G3 configuration is a dedicated emergency medical platform. During the Honolulu floods, it functioned as a mobile, armored triage center. Key features that supported this mission include:

  • Deep Water Fording: Optional kits allow the BearCat to operate in significant water depths, protecting the engine and critical systems from flooding.
  • Medical Interior: The G3 model offers a spacious interior designed to house up to (4) litters (stretchers) and (4) paramedics, ensuring that patients receive immediate care the moment they are pulled from the water.
  • All-Weather Reliability: Much like its performance during Hurricane Irma and the Colorado blizzards, the BearCat’s 10-ton weight and low center of gravity provide the stability needed to operate safely in high winds and moving water.

A Proven Track Record in Natural Disasters

The success in Honolulu is the latest example of how the BearCat is evolving beyond its tactical roots. From navigating mudslides in California to rescuing motorists in New England blizzards, the BearCat has established a new standard for “all-hazards” response.
