Lenco Stories: BearCat Vehicles Save Lives in California Search & Rescue Response

In January 2018, Southern California experienced a devastating weather event that left communities reeling. Torrential rainfall turned fire‑scarred hillsides into mudslides and flash floods, overwhelming Montecito and surrounding areas and trapping residents inside their homes under layers of mud and debris. Standard emergency vehicles struggled to reach those in danger, but Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office’s new BearCat armored rescue vehicles did not.

A Mission Born Before Crisis

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office had taken delivery of two Lenco BearCat G3 vehicles just months earlier, in November 2017. Although they were initially used during wildfire response for the Thomas Fire, this event marked the first time the vehicles were deployed for search, evacuation, and rescue operations.

When mudslides destroyed homes and created barriers of mud too deep for conventional vehicles to traverse, the BearCats were called into action. Their timing couldn’t have been more critical.

“The BearCat has some impressive capabilities, and even before the debris flow incident we used the vehicles to respond to a huge fire, which shows that these vehicles can be used in a variety of dangerous situations. The BearCat’s performance really speaks for itself.” – Lt. Brian Thielst, Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office

Built for the Worst Conditions

Unlike traditional emergency vehicles, BearCat armored rescue vehicles are engineered to handle conditions that would stop others in their tracks. With four‑wheel drive, high ground clearance, and off‑road capabilities, they can drive through several feet of mud, water, and debris that would otherwise isolate stranded residents.

The BearCat’s rugged design played a vital role in enabling deputies to reach homes cut off by mud and flooding. In one memorable rescue, the BearCat pulled up alongside a condo buried in mud where a father and son were stranded. Their regular vehicles were ruined and walking was impossible; without the BearCat, they may not have made it out safely.

“It’s a godsend they have these two vehicles. All of our low-level cars would not have been able to get through the mud” – David Brown, rescuee

Over the course of the response, the two BearCats were credited with dozens of rescues, helping people and pets travel from danger zones to safety as mandatory evacuation orders were in effect.

More Than a Tactical Vehicle

The Santa Barbara rescue effort highlights how BearCats are used beyond tactical roles. In addition to high-risk law enforcement scenarios, these vehicles are increasingly recognized as essential tools for disaster response, especially where terrain and conditions are unpredictable.

Lenco BearCats are engineered for extreme environments, including:

  • Wind-force tested up to 233 mph
  • Gradeability tested to 60%
  • Impact resistance up to 40,000 lbs
  • Enhanced side slope stability
  • Water fording capabilities up to 40 inches
  • Optional mission-specific configurations, such as rescue cameras, to maintain situational awareness in hazardous conditions

These features ensure the BearCat can navigate mud, debris, floodwaters, and other challenging environments safely, giving first responders the protection and capability they need.

Lenco’s Commitment to Saving Lives

At Lenco Armored Vehicles, we build BearCats knowing that real‑world emergencies don’t always fit neatly into a response plan. Whether facing natural disasters, hazardous terrain, or complex coordination challenges, BearCats continue to prove themselves as versatile, dependable assets for agencies committed to protecting their communities.
